New Government Canal Policy On The Way

The Waterways Minister, Huw Irranca-Davies, has given details of the new waterway policy being drawn up by the Government. At the annual conference of the Association of Inland Navigation Authorities, held in London in December, he told delegates that there would be two main changes from the original Waterways For Tomorrow, which was published in June 2000. These would be "an enhanced view of local authorities" - referring to the support that councils can give towards waterway upkeep - and a chance to "develop and enhance the huge contribution that volunteers make". Restoration will be supported "in principle", but the main priority will be keeping the network sustainable.
