The canal may attract comparatively few boats, but the towpath is always busy, right from Manchester to Sowerby Bridge. Two long-distance paths, the Calderdale Way and Oldham Way, follow the route for a while. To slavishly follow the towpath would be a missed opportunity given the hill-walking opportunities available between Hebden Bridge and Littleborough: signposting is generally good but an Ordnance Survey map is recommended. A I leritage Trail departs from the canal at the Summit Inn and takes in several industrial archaeological sites.'I he railway follows the full length of the canal with frequent stations (see maps), making oneway walks easy.
