Fateful day on the Severn

October 25th 1960 dawned a bright autumn morning. Children from Berkeley and Sharpness made their way to catch the morning train across the Severn Railway Bridge, to attend classes at Lydney Grammar School. The crews of John Harker Ltd's tanker barges were setting out from Gloucester, ready to go through swing bridges - opened regularly at 5am - on their journey to reach Sharpness.
