Having been a canal boater for many years, I have had a long association with Daventry and the charming surrounding villages. I appreciate what a tremendous asset the Grand Union and North Oxford canals are to the area. Their fascinating history makes the area the centre of the national canal system. After leaving the speed, congestion, and angst of our motorways, the peace and tranquility of the canals is a true panacea. That is, until the good weather and summer season approach! Then you wonder if there is any difference between the canals and the motorways. It is a regular occurrence to join a convoy of as many as 20 or more boats.
