Sapperton tunnel Thames & Severn Canal

Sapperton tunnel, on the Thames & Severn Canal, was truly ground-breaking. At 3,817 yards (2 1/4 miles), it was not only the longest canal tunnel in the world when completed, it was also of much larger dimensions than its predecessors. It was built 15ft wide to accommodate Thames barges: others had been only wide enough for narrowboats. Though derelict for many years, it remains the third longest canal tunnel in the UK today. It deserves its rating as one of the Severn Modern Wonders of the Waterways in a recent poll for WW.
