HS2 CROSSINGS THREATEN CANALS

Plans unveiled recently for the proposed national HS2 high speed rail project from London to Birmingham showed the proposed route crossing over the canals in ten places. Two of these would leave headroom of less than five feet above the water, effectively severing the canal, while three more would be only ten feet high. At this stage it is not known if this would be the level of the track or the air draught available to boats. While British Waterways is not opposing construction, it is meeting transport officials to ensure any chosen route does not obstruct navigation or waterway restoration plans.
