The Leeds & Liverpool Canal is walkers' heaven. Perhaps only the Mon & Brec in South Wales can offer as many spectacular routes right from the water's edge. Good train links facilitate a number of enjoyable one-way walks along the mainly well-maintained towpath: Shipley to Bingley (four miles) gives an intriguing mix of urban and rural scenery, with the multiple attractions of Saltaire thrown in en route. Skipton to Gargrave (five miles) offers marvellous Pennine views and a rewarding climax in one of the village pubs or tearooms. But if you're prepared to leave the towpath then the world (or at least this lovely corner of the Yorkshire Dales) is your oyster. East Marton is perhaps the best place to base yourself; with an Ordnance Survey map numerous circular walks will suggest themselves, many of them incorporating sections of the Pennine Way.
