Aqua narrowboats run a hire fleet on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Willington, and use their expertise in hard-wearing craft to build bespoke boats as well. Speedy Whippet is a 60ft narrowboat built for long-term cruising comfort. Below the surface, high levels of specification point to an owner who knows what they want. The aft deck is best described as an open semi-trad stern; large lockers give seating, while a balustrade-effect back provides support and semi-encloses the cockpit. Under the deck is the Beta engine, which has been fitted with the Dometic Travelpower unit to give pure sine wave 230V power with the engine running, in addition to the Victron combined inverter/charger and the twin 12V alternators. Solar panels were just about to be fitted, giving back-up charging when the boat is not cruising, with a monitor placed inside the cabin. The engine drives an Axiom propeller, via an Aquadrive coupling, which should give good performance and longevity, while a Vetus bowthruster helps with tight manoeuvres.
