SECOND TIME AROUND

On one of those afternoons in early December 2013 when the light is failing and the prospect of a long dark winter begins to depress the mood, my wife, Chris, came home early from work and found me looking at a very seductive website. Peering over my shoulder, she soon agreed that there were, in fact, a fair number of narrowboats on brokerage that we could afford. Having moved to Cornwall in 1999 after three years as liveaboard cruisers, our only links to the canals had been visits to our friends in Braunston and a couple of holidays on the Monmouthshire & Brecon. Several aborted attempts at moving house had unsettled us but suddenly the prospect of owning a boat and returning to the cut was a realistic possibility.
