New £15m bid for Montgomery Canal extension

Powys County Council and the Canal & River Trust have submitted a joint £15m bid to the UK Government's Levelling Up Fund towards completing the Montgomery Canal restoration. The grant would fund work needed to link Llanymynech with the restorec 12 miles around Welshpool. The news came as Simon Hart MR UK Secretary of State for Wales, visited Welshpool with local MPs Craig Williams and Owen Paterson, for a cruise on the Heulwen Ⅲ trip-boat to see the 12-mile isolated section for themselves. Thirty years after restoration it has been silting up again and is overgrown. Connection to the main network would give fresh impetus to the full restoration to Newtown.
