When Ealing Studios produced a fictionalised documentary on the lives of working boatmen during World War II, it was perhaps inevitable that they would choose the most recognisable element of canal culture as the title for the film: Painted Boats. This traditional artform, known as 'roses and castles', continues to be synonymous with the waterways' cargo-carrying past.
