Two slim volumes from the Basingstoke Canal Society provide a new perspective on this exquisitely beautiful waterway that might have bypassed even the experts. One describes the 30 or so bridges that have either vanished or been built over. It outlines their methods of construction and tells anecdotes about their history and loss. It's a dry but curiously compelling litany of lost canal architecture.
