Of the many architectural icons that dominate London's skyline, Tower Bridge must surely rank highly among the nation's favourites. Its Gothic-style towers and abutments, and hydraulically powered central leaves, are as impressive now as they were 125 years ago when the structure was opened. While having clocked in over a century's worth of lifts for boat passages, Tower Bridge is, in fact, one of the youngest crossings of the Thames in central London. Designed by Sir Horace Jones and Sir John Wolfe Barry, it was completed in 1894 after eight years of construction, and it wasn't until 2000 that it was joined by another new structure - the pedestrian-only Millennium Bridge.
