MAJOR CHANGES TO A TELFORD LOCK COTTAGE

Extensive building work is being carried out at the Thomas Telford-designed lock cottage at the top of the Audlem flight of 15 locks on the Shropshire Union Canal. The cottage, an unlisted building, has been partially demolished and a large two-storey modern house is being built alongside the single-storey hexagonal-roofed room. (This room's triple-aspect windows allowed the lock-keeper to look up and down the cut for approaching boats.) The old and new buildings are just inches apart. Parts of the roof and back wall of the original building have been removed. The new two-storey building bears no relation to the typical Telford design.
