In our debate between two experts, Crossfire invites Julian Caldecott to debate with Ed Stentiford and Iole Issaias the following: 'Carbon mitigation funds can be used as an important vehicle to deliver the water and sanitation targets of the MDGs'.rnDear Ed and Iole,rnThe most important greenhouse gases (GHGs) contain carbon, and as agents of global warming are dominated by carbon dioxide (CO_2) and methane (CH_4). Both occur naturally, carbon being cycled through organisms and released as these gases by respiration, fermentation, fire and decay. Machines also release CO_2 when they burn oil, coal, gas and other hydrocarbon fossil fuels. The world's growing energy use and industrial output has been sustained almost entirely for 150 years by burning fossil fuels, and by converting natural ecosystems into farmlands, cities and wastelands.
