The Walkerton Inquiry has identified that training and certification and the system that supports it as a central element to the development of the tragedy and although there are some significant differences in our countries training frameworks there are also significant commonalities. In many respects the Australian VET system has been willing to explore for better and more competitive training practices consistent with established educational theory. However, as with all other human endeavours there is often a gap between training theory and successful implementation in the real world. Perhaps in the light of the analysis provided through the Walkerton Report we have an opportunity to further review our training processes to ensure inadequate training could not be the cause of such an event in Australia. Indeed we have a responsibility to minimise the risk of such an outcome in this country into the future. (It can happen here, remember Cryptosporidum/Sydney 1998).
