My observations for this edition are a combination of policy, practice, logistics and congratulation. For those who have had enough editorialising, please skip to column three. The title of this piece is actually only partly true; the reality is that water and electricity are actually very closely linked. Paradoxically, the water industry needs the electricity as much as the electricity industry needs water. For example, Sydney Water consumes almost one per cent of grid electricity in NSW. Some of the largest areas where electricity is consumed are in pumping water and wastewater or in operation of water treatment and wastewater treatment plants. Of course, the higher the level of treatment (whether this be higher quality recycled water or desalination of seawater) the greater the energy required.
