ENVIRO08 THE SUSTAINABILITY CONFERENCE

As many delegates remarked in conversation, Enviro08 seemed different from previous events. Trying to analyse why, we came to the conclusion that there seemed to be more emphasis on strategy and policy than on technology. But when one re-read the pre-conference brochure, it became clear that this was a deliberate move by the Program Committee. And it worked. This was clearly demonstrated at the Final Session. A novel plenary session on the first day had been the titled "Communique". It was eloquently led by Peter Schmigel of Parker and Partners, who interrogated a panel with some leading questions on sustainability, and garnered some interesting and sometimes conflicting views. But then he posed similar questions to the audience, and by personal keypads and wireless technology we were encouraged to vote for our preferred answers ... the resultant bar charts being shown on-screen within seconds of the close of voting.
