The water industry is renowned for its TLA's (Three Letter Acronyms.) I have been in the water industry for over a decade now and I am still learning them. There are the organisational acronyms (NHMRC, DSE, IPART, WQRA -the successor to the CRC for WQ&T) and the operational terms (PRV, MAR, ADWG, DALY's, RO, EDC) and then we get into the scientific abbreviations (which, for reasons of space, we need not go into now.) And of course, just when you get to know one of them, those masters of acronyms - the bureaucrats - change it on you (did you know that your federal water officials live within DEWHA?) But enough of this. Sometimes good can come from all these letters. WICD is one of them. The Water Industry Capacity Development program is a collaborative industry initiative. It has been around for a couple of years now and its work is regularly featured in the pages of this journal. WICD's active participants come from across the water industry: utilities, irrigators, operators, education, vocational training and more. It has allowed many concerned parties in the industry to actively address the long term skills issues in this sector. The result has been a list of projects and activities identified and driven by the industry. Indeed, the good will of many of the participants saw them individually resourcing and/or funding the development or delivery of the priority projects.
