On 16 and 17 November, AWA convened its first National Water Leadership Summit in Canberra. The event - intended to showcase leading edge thinking about the future of the water sector - brought together industry leaders from across the nation. As should be the case with any event at which new notions are discussed, there was some controversy. AWA was honoured to have as our dinner speaker Senator Barnaby Joyce, Shadow Minister for Regional Development, Local Government and Water. Senator Joyce was highly critical of the Murray-Darling Basin Authority's approach to the development of the Basin Plan and expressed scepticism about the feasibility of moving water around the basin system efficiently as trades in water entitlements occur. The Senator did not shy away from defending his comments either, returning to the podium to respond to questions from dinner guests. The dinner was soonsored bv Aurecon.
