Yorkshire Water has unveiled its latest strategies and tools for reducing water loss, approaches developed through collaboration with industry partners. It is aiming for a complete end to supply interruptions, excavations and traffic disruption. With a strong focus on innovation, the water company - which supplies two million customers in the area of Yorkshire in the north-east England with 1.3 billion litres of water per day - has developed various strategies and technology to increase the efficiency of the process of reacting to, locating, and preventing leaks. But as Simon Barnes, head of innovation delivery, comments: 'Yorkshire Water wants to innovate, but where do you start? The metrics are huge.' In the period 2004-2005 there were 70,000 interruptions to Yorkshire Water's customers, and total digging to fix broken pipes would have produced a trench stretching from Bradford to Birmingham, a distance of 88 miles (140 km).'We've been repairing pipes the same way for the past 50 years,' explains Barnes,'Health and safety have moved on, but the devices we've been using haven't.'
