Realistic targets for water and wastewater disease risks

In a recent paper, Professor Durican Mara from the University of Leeds, UK, details the case for his long-held view that the quality objectives suggested in the World Health Organization's (WHO) Drinking Water Quality Guidelines and in the Guidelines for Wastewater Use in Agriculture are unnecessarily high. He believes that they are unrealistic and that, especially in low and middle-income countries, a lower initial standard would be more cost-effective without significantly increasing the risk of waterborne disease.
