Increasing focus on disaster resilience

A study and a major World Bank-hosted conference on the same theme recently explored both disaster prevention and recovery, focusing on building disaster resilience and preparedness teamed with international cooperation, climate mitigation and green growth. The study, from Independent Evaluation at the ADB, which was working in tandem with the Philippine Institute for Development studies and the UK's Oxford University, identified three major risks that can turn hazards into disasters: the exposure of a growing population; their greater vulnerability in dealing with hazards; and the increase in the frequency and intensity of climate-related events.
