Well Rehabilitation: A Forensic Approach

As wells drilled during the decades of the 1940s through the 1980s continue to age and deteriorate through daily use, normal stress, and corrosion, well drilling contractors and well owners are forced to consider whether rehabilitation is warranted or if the well should be replaced with a new one. This is also true in cases where the owner desires to pump water from an older well at a higher flow rate than in past years. The process involved in making this decision does not have to be a complicated one, nor one that requires complex engineering calculations, but some uniform method of analysis should be used by the well contractor when evaluating possible well problems to ensure that the right decision is made.
