Everyone in the country knows about the boom in unconventional oil and gas development, but many professionals working in the groundwater industry know there is more to the story-that it has presented many challenges to groundwater resources. The National Ground Water Association has hosted multiple workshops on the subject in recent years, bringing together scientists and practitioners from the groundwater and oil and gas industries, government, and universities to identify data gaps, science needs, and recommendations for reducing uncertainties related to groundwater risks. NGWA will host its third such event when "Groundwater and Oil and Gas Development: Improved Management Practices for Groundwater Protection and Water Supply" takes place March 4-5 in San Antonio, Texas. The workshop will focus on water availability and improved water management practices for groundwater protection. The keynote address is titled "Wellbore Barriers-More Than Just a Good Cement Job" and will be presented by Glen Benge, an independent consultant specializing in well-bore isolation and well cementing. Retired from ExxonMobil where he spent more than 24 years working as a technical advisor in drilling, Benge has 40 years of experience associated with all aspects of well cementing and isolation and has authored numerous papers and texts on all aspects of cementing design and application. Since his address focuses on a subject important to all in the groundwater industry, Water Well Journal sat down with Benge briefly to hear his insights on wellbore integrity and get a preview of his keynote presentation.
