The February 2019 issue of Water Well Journal focuses on drilling tips and techniques and contains an important feature article on drilling straight wells. Freelance writer Jennifer Strawn begins the cover story titled "Plumbness and Alignment" on page 19 by stating if you're a contractor installing municipal, industrial, or irrigation wells with lineshaft turbine pumps-and not testing for plumbness and alignment, you're making a big mistake. Strawn spoke with a McEllhiney Lecturer and National Ground Water Association past president and clearly defines plumbness and alignment and explains why they matter. She also describes how to drill a plumb borehole, how to test for plumbness and alignment, and the benefits of conducting such tests-even when they're not required on the job. In a Water Well Journal Q&A on page 24, Senior Editor Mike Price spoke with Glen Benge, an independent consultant specializing in wellbore isolation and well cementing. Benge will be providing the keynote address at the NGWA workshop "Groundwater and Oil and Gas Development: Improved Management Practices for Groundwater Protection and Water Supply," which takes place March 4-5 in San Antonio, Texas. His talk is titled "Wellbore Barriers-More Than Just a Good Cement Job." He gives Price a preview of what he will be discussing with attendees along with providing insight on well integrity. Retired from ExxonMobil where he spent more than 24 years working as a technical advisor in drilling, Benge has 40 years of experience associated with all aspects of well cementing design.
