摘要

A description is given of the solution used by the Canal de Isabel II (CYII) in response to the need to monitor 500 small facilities scattered throughout a region covering a surface area of 8,000 km~2. The system design, and the hardware and software, have been developed entirely by the CYII using easy-maintenance criteria. As most of the facilities lack an electricity supply, alternative methods are used. Energy consumption is greatly reduced by intermittent operation. Communication is by radio, making use of the company's own networks. The theoretical bases of the intermittent operation, the overall characteristics and the experience obtained are all explained through an approach that focuses upon the part of the system that is installed in situ.
