A leading earth scientist, Dr Chris Hartnady, has called on stakeholders to not only be aware of the environmental impacts and geophysical risks of shale-gas production but also to evaluate the full energy cost as well as other economic considerations. Dr Hartnady, the research and technical director of Umvoto Africa, was speaking at the Shale Southern Africa conference in Cape Town on March 26. He highlighted a number of important aspects related specifically to the effect on water quality and supply in the region.
