French scientists warn of risks from atypical scrapie

It is premature to conclude that transmissible spongiform encephalopathies other than BSE pose no risk to human health, the French food safety agency (Afssa) says in an opinion on scrapie and atypical scrapie in sheep and goats. The Afssa opinion has been scrutinized by the European Food Safety Authority, which adopted its own opinion at a biohazards panel meeting early this month in response to a mandate from the European Commission. The EFSA opinion is expected to be published in two weeks time following final editing.
