With the banning of sludge dumping at sea, the increased cost of landfill and the slow down of the UK's municipal incinerator programme, the options for disposal of treated sewage sludge are narrowing rapidly. The most viable means of disposal is now waste to land. However, the demands of organisations, such as the British Retail Consortium, place a duty of care on water companies to ensure that sludge is treated properly prior to disposal. This further calls into question the traceability of sludge and the tracking methods currently used by water companies to ensure compliance.
