In Compliance The proper disposal of printer inks

The store purchased a dry technology printer. We noticed there is an inkwell and the printhead periodically visits the inkwell to clean itself out by squirting ink into the well. When we asked the equipment supplier if there was a special way to handle the media when it needs to be changed out, we were told it was OK to toss it in the trash. How accurate is this advice? For the most part, the equipment supplier is correct. Testing by PMA on similar media filters indicate the material generally would not be classified as a hazardous waste, so tossing it in the trash is a generally acceptable disposal method. The big limitation on this statement is if the printer uses water-based inks. Solvent-based inks are a different regulatory issue.
