PIPELINE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION IN SENSITIVE SETTINGS

Lakes and streams and the water therein have long been the focus of Americans when it comes to a second home location. Large land development projects have been designed and built to provide lots, townhomes, condominiums, golf courses, marinas, and campgrounds for sale and lease (Figure 1). Many of these developments have been constructed in sensitive settings around lakes with large amounts of limestone at or near the surface where septic systems and leaching fields cannot be installed properly. The engineering designer must analyze the situation to determine if the solution for wastewater disposal will be (1) a typical gravity sewerline collection system, (2) a pumped sewer effluent system, (3) a pressure sewer system, or (4) a combination of the three methods.
