WATER SYSTEM PIPELINE DESIGN IN LANDFILL AREAS

Water utilities and engineers who design water systems have a responsibility to the public to be knowledgeable of the special considerations that are required to design a safe and sustainable water system within landfill areas. Although installations in landfill areas should generally be avoided if possible, there may be public and political pressure for a utility to extend service to developments in such areas. Special consideration needs to be given to the water quality vulnerability potential, excessive settlement, the need to provide clean corridors for water system pipelines, and the careful selection of pipe and pipe joint gasket material.
