EPA Extends Comment Period For In-Situ Recovery Uranium Mining Rule

EPA is extending by 30 days the public comment period for a proposed rule that would create groundwater protections governing in-situ recovery (ISR) uranium mining, after the mining industry sought an extension to give them more time to fully review the proposal. In a notice published in the Federal Register April 24, EPA announced it is extending the public comment period to May 27 on its proposed rule, "Health and Environmental Protection Standards for Uranium and Thorium Mill Tailings." The agency originally gave the public 90 days to comment on the rule, and held a public hearing in Washington, DC, to take oral comments March 10.
