Study Shows States Eyeing Stronger Link To EPA On Research Priorities

A study recently highlighted by state environmental commissioners at their annual spring meeting shows "a clear need" for stronger ties between EPA's Office of Research & Development (ORD) and state regulators, with most states interested in working with ORD in setting priorities, according to the findings. The study also lists priorities for research needs of state regulators, flagging priorities within each type of media, including nonpoint source pollution practices, air quality multi-pollutant work and expanding waste recycling research. During a March 18 discussion at the Environmental Council of the States' (ECOS) annual spring meeting in Washington, DC, ECOS members reviewed the two-part study, conducted over the summer and fall of last year, which surveyed state environmental regulators on their research needs and priorities. The study was conducted by the Environmental Research Institute of States (ERIS), a nonprofit research and education entity that supports ECOS.
