Die grosse Elbeflut im Sommer 2002 aus historischer und kuenftiger Sicht

The flood event along the river Elbe in summer 2002 has shocked Germany. The paper describes the integration of this extreme flood into long-term series of water-level observations, the historical use of the riverside areas, and flood protection according to the four classical" archaic" methods. New concepts are developed with regard to the cultivated lands on the basis of regulating weirs and water reservoirs widely spread throughout the catchment areas.
