Findlay, Ohio, was inauspiciously founded during the War of 1812, when Col. James Findlay, commanding a regiment of the Ohio Frontier Army, opened a road to the Blanchard River and built a stockade there. The stockade, known as Fort Findlay, was abandoned after the war, but the seeds for a permanent settlement had been planted. The city found prosperity and steady growth after the discovery of gas and oil there in 1886. Findlay began treating its wastewater in 1933 but has significantly upgraded and expanded its treatment capabilities through the years. Today, the City of Findlay Water Pollution Control Center is a secondary treatment plant discharging into the Blanchard River, which indirectly discharges into Lake Erie. Influent is 90 percent to 93 percent domestic and 7 percent to 10 percent industrial wastewater.
