Frederique Constant was founded in 1988, by Peter and Aletta Stas. The couple, who met while they were both working in Hong Kong, discovered they shared a passion for fine timepieces. Coming home after a day in the office, they would wind down, as described by Peter, "by creating watch designs just for fun." The "fun designs" Peter and Aletta sketched in Hong Kong became the inspiration for Frederique Constant. The company's name is a combination of the names of the founder's great-grandparents, Frederique Schreiner and Constant Stas. In the early 1900s, Constant Stas owned a lithograph company that also produced clock dials. "The adventure really started in 1991," Peter states, "when we received our first order of 350 timepieces: the Frederique Constant company was born."
