Physician groups have come out in support of legislation that would require drug manufacturers to disclose gifts to physicians, saying it would help stop industry from "subtly manipulating" healthcare decisions. The National Physicians Alliance, the American Medical Student Association and the Prescription Project spoke in favor of S. 2029, the Physician Payments Sunshine Act, which was introduced by Sens. Herb Kohl (D-Wis.) and Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) (WDL, Sept. 10). The bill would require manufacturers to disclose gifts and reimbursements of more than $25 in value. Penalties for not reporting the payments range from $10,000 to $100,000 per violation.
