House lawmakers today quickly hashed out the details of two bills aimed at promoting U.S. nuclear energy and improving oversight. The current fleet of about 100 nuclear power plants generate around 20 percent of the country's electricity, but many of the plants are nearing the end of their licenses. "Unnecessary regulatory costs are adding to challenging economic conditions," said Rep. Ed Whitfield (R-Ky.), chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Energy and Power. "This outlook provides a timely opportunity to examine proposals to improve the regulatory framework for nuclear power plants and options to develop a regulatory framework for advanced nuclear technologies," he said at today's hearing.
