FDA Principal Deputy Commissioner Joshua Sharfstein succeeded acting FDA Commissioner Frank Torti last Monday, Bill Hall, director of the HHS news division, told WDL. President Barack Obama appointed Sharfstein as principal deputy commissioner earlier this month, a position that does not require Senate confirmation {WDL, March 16). Obama also named Margaret Hamburg as his nominee for FDA commissioner. "Josh Sharfstein is part of a strong team with sterling public health credentials and demonstrated management abilities," Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) told WDL. "It is good that the agency will have Josh in place to lead the agency while Dr. Hamburg goes through the confirmation process."
