Aircraft carriers and amphibious warfare ships form a continuous spectrum of roles and capabilities that extend from the CVN with its multirole air group to the LCAC with its cargo of armored vehicles and supplies. These ships all share one feature that distinguishes them from the surface combatants sector: they do not themselves fight. They act as platforms from which are launched other combat units that do the fighting for them. Aircraft carriers launch fighters, strike aircraft, and anti-submarine helicopters. Amphibious warfare ships land infantry and armored marine units. If either has to engage in direct fighting, something has gone very wrong.
