An organization's reputation is increasingly at risk online. Financial-services firms, in particular, are constantly updating their Web sites to provide readily accessible information, services and products to their customers and provide a high degree of visibility for the company and its brands. However, a number of highly publicized online-privacy breaches over the past few years has helped fuel a lack of trust and has caused significant reputation and financial implications for the organizations involved. Some notable examples of online privacy breaches include: 1. An online financial-services provider found to be inadvertently passing personal information to a third-party through poor Web site construction. 2. A number of Web sites of a sensitive nature found to be using Web beacons to transfer information about their Web-site visitors to a third-party ad server who had the potential to use the information for profiling purposes. 3. An online retailer found to be automatically passing personal information of online shoppers to a third-party Web site without their knowledge.
