AS I WRITE THIS, the market is in the midst of a month-long U.S. equity slide that has brought the S&P 500 down more than 17 percent with no floor in sight. And while Standard and Poor's just downgraded U.S. debt, leaving the coun-try in a political bind, Greece, Portugal, Ireland, Spain and Italy are looking like a financial train wreck, causing experts to won-der whether the euro will survive.
