Vietnamese Rice: Rise in Price, Absence in Strong Brand

Domestic rice pricc is VND3 million a tonne (equivalent of US$188), while in the world market, the price of Vietnamese rice increased an additional US$35-42 a tonne, a record high. In such circumstances, Vietnamese businesses arc trying to develop brands for Vietnamese rice. Meanwhile, American and Thai rice have already been abundant in Vietnamese market. Prof. Dr Vo Tong Xuan, Dean of An Giang University, recently led a delegation of six scientists to help Sierra Leone plant rice. It is also the first attempt to find a new land for Vietnamese rice. According Dr Xuan, in 2006, the planting of rice strains OM 2417 and Jasmine proved to be successful and Vietnam will continue to supply Sierra Leone main strains of rice. In 2008, 20 Vietnamese farmers will be sent to work in Sierra Leone.
