The world is slowly emerging from the pandemic only to find itself in the throes of the first global energy crisis in decades. No region is experiencing energy supply woes as acutely as Europe, which is already beginning to feel the economic, national security, political, and social impacts of the energy crunch. Fossil fuel prices have seen a dramatic increase, as spot prices for natural gas have surged some 700% this year while crude oil nears a multi-year high. The supply story for natural gas in Europe has been especially important as both primary sources – imports of liquified natural gas (LNG) and pipeline gas from Russia – remain tight.
