A power station operating by chain nuclear fission directly converting a part of the nuclear energy to electrical energy, makes use of the kinetic energy of the fission fragments by causing them to overcome a high potential difference. The nuclear fuel is in the form of leaves several microns thick. They are placed inside compartments almost completely closed and designed to recover almost all the electric charges carried by the emitted fission fragments. The potential difference between the leaves and the walls is 1.5-2 MW, and the system is a source of direct current under very high potential. Communicating holes between the compartments give ways for high tension connections and for gases and allow the establishing of a high vacuum. The compartments are arranged in modules connected to a source of vacuum of 10-6-10-7mmHg. A heat transfer fluid flows round to take out and use the heat transmitted to the walls by the impact of the fragments. The heat is used to operate thermal motors and alternators. The overall yield of energy from the installation can be 50% greater than that from existing installations. Thermal pollution is less, the technology is simpler and the cost of building the station is less.
