摘要

Julius Becton Jr.'s first mission as a 19-year-old Army private in 1945 was to take his rifle, a bullhorn and a translator into the mountains of the island of Morotai. The Pacific campaign of World War II had formally ended, and Becton's job was persuading Japanese stragglers to surrender. Some didn't, and the young soldier spent a lot of time ducking hostile fire. "I saw more combat after the war was over than before," he recalls.
