Lucent sees the light

In the 1950s, the psychologist Harold Maslow came up with a concept he called the human hierarchy of needs. Everyone, he said, requires food, water, and shelter to live a basic existence. Beyond that, they need love, esteem, and something he termed self-actualization. Richard McGinn, the cerebral CEO of Lucent Technologies, argues that Mas-low's hierarchy could use a little updating. Today, he says, humans also need high-speed bandwidth—and plenty of it. "It's really becoming that important," says McGinn. "People are shaping how they run their professional and personal lives around their access to information."
