摘要

Iraq's major cities buzz with the routine of daily life: Parents send their children to school, young men wash their cars in the streets, and couples go out for ice cream. Less visible, but no less real, is a corrosive fear fueled by the unrelenting insurgency. "Now I am afraid of any car that parks in front of my supermarket," says Ali Amar, 36, the owner of a small grocery in Baghdad's Mansour neighborhood, an upscale residential area where bombers have struck several times. "I keep one eye on my business and the other on the street outside. There are car bombs even in my dreams!"
